Abstract

Ibn Taymiyyah (1263–1328 CE) was a prominent Islamic scholar whose economic thought emphasized justice, maslahah (public welfare), market mechanisms, the prohibition of riba (usury), and social solidarity. These principles are relevant to the Village Cooperative Merah Putih (Koperasi Desa Merah Putih or KDMP), an Indonesian government initiative founded on the values of justice, kinship, mutual cooperation, and deliberation to improve rural community welfare. Through the One Village One Commodity (OVOC) program, KDMP promotes the development of local potential while serving as a platform for managing productive community-based enterprises. This study aims to examine the relevance of Ibn Taymiyyah’s economic thought to the practices of the Village Cooperative Merah Putih. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using literature review and normative analysis of Ibn Taymiyyah’s economic concepts and the policies and implementation of KDMP. The findings indicate that KDMP practices are consistent with Ibn Taymiyyah’s principles of Islamic economics, particularly in promoting equitable distribution of benefits, deliberative decision-making, public welfare orientation, and social solidarity while avoiding riba and exploitation. The study concludes that the Village Cooperative Merah Putih represents a contemporary manifestation of classical Islamic economic thought and contributes to achieving socially just economic development in line with Indonesia Emas 2045.
